I think of all the IKEA furniture that I have seen eaten by life. The end tables with broken legs, the cracked slats of futon frames, the particleboard desks left out on the curb and destroyed by the rain before they can be taken to a new home. IKEA, one of the largest consumers of wood in the world, has made furniture into something that gets used up. But what I like, what makes me laugh a little about “for people, not consumers,” is the implication that consumers are not people.
They are bigger and heavier than my grandfather’s two volumes of “Illustrated English Social History.” We put them near the fireplace and sit on them. The former owners of our house, who were white, made extra money by allowing the house to be used as a set for commercials. John discovers this when he gets a call from a casting agent who wants to know if the house is available. All we have to do is leave the house for three days and two nights and we will earn eight thousand dollars. Polly tells us about her career, the good times and the bad, and there are plenty of interesting stories along the way, about the girls, the johns, the crooked cops, the Manhattan high-life and low-life.

The family she was living with turned their backs on her, and Polly was out on her own. Those of you who have read the book and watch the film from 1964 with Shelley Winters as Polly Adler, whitch version is best?. I like the movie but I think Shelley Winters should have played the middle aged Polly Adler and have a younger actress play Polly in her 20’s. In 1968, Stevie Wonder recorded an instrumental version of this song on his album "Eivets Rednow". Various jazz musicians have performed and recorded the song, and it has thus acquired the status of a jazz standard. The Warwick single was performed in the key of F major, and it is most often played in that key in jazz interpretations.

But all those praising her writing, should know that Adler’s book was ghostwritten by Virginia Faulkner. This is an incredible glimpse into the roaring 20s. It came as a shocking surprise when I randomly mentioned Polly Adler in a social responsibility course at NYU Stern. Turns out, my professor's mother was cousins with Polly Adler and no one really liked talking about it. The book flows very well and I believe it is as frank as it could be. Great, too-forgotten book that really should be considered a major feminist text.
Bill and I were temp workers, years ago, at the same publishing company in New York. “Stock Market Wizards” featured interviews with traders who made millions during “the glory days of the internet boom,” and nearly all of them told stories about losing everything before they made it big. They lost houses, they lost life savings lent to them by relatives, and they lost marriages. They weren’t wizards, just gamblers who could tolerate major losses. He has told me, already, about attending the same elementary school my son attends, and of being beaten on the playground.
She also tells of her entanglement with the Seabury Investigation into municipal corruption, and her conviction five years later for running a disorderly house, which resulted in a 30-day sentence. From there, the account becomes sadder, and—frankly—somewhat less interesting. But Polly is a trooper to the last; she soldiers on. Adler's story fills an important gap in the history of immigrant life, urban experience, and organized crime in New York City.
I wonder what this really means, in a lived life—to treat most increase as a gift. I think of Toni Morrison and the women she lived among in Queens in the seventies. She was a single mother supporting two young children, but she’d send a check, a “grant,” to another woman writer, say, Toni Cade Bambara, whenever she made some extra money freelancing. And Toni Cade Bambara, or someone else, might show up at her house with groceries, unasked, and cook dinner.
I've always been after the inside scoop on life and have been particularly fascinated by the ladies of the night, call 'em what you will, they each have complex stories and I love 'em, and spent some of the best months of my life in their tender care. That it is illegal and shamed in most of this country is a mortal sin. My book on all that to follow soon, but I digress. Polly bares her backstory with intimate details of 'the life.' Back in the wild West Big Nose Kate had tried to publish her memoir, but in that time raw truth had to be gussied up & women's versions of life were discouraged. Polly's book is one of many that have since broken through the glass and well worth reading.
When we bought this house after years of looking, I was no longer convinced that I wanted a house. The money in our savings account was not money, in my mind, it was time. All those dollars were hours banked, to be spent on writing, not working.
